Curtains Dubai: Why My First Set Faded And Shrank Within One Summer
I bought my first set of curtains in Dubai from a large mall showroom. They looked beautiful. Heavy velvet. Rich burgundy color. I paid 2,800 AED for the living room. Within one summer, they were ruined.
The color faded to a patchy pinkish-brown. The fabric shrank by nearly 10 percent, leaving the curtains too short for the window. The lining disintegrated into dust. I learned a hard lesson about curtains in Dubai.
Curtains here face UV radiation that is among the highest in the world. They face heat that degrades fibers. They face humidity that causes mold on natural fabrics. And they face dust that embeds into every weave.
I am now on my third set of curtains across two apartments. Here is what actually works for curtains in Dubai and what fails immediately.
The Fabric That Survived Vs The Fabric That Failed
The velvet curtains failed first. Velvet is delicate. The pile crushed unevenly. Dust clung to the nap. The color faded unevenly. After cleaning, the curtains looked worse.
My second attempt was linen. Linen is natural and breathable. In Dubai, linen wrinkles instantly. The humidity made it sag. The sun bleached it to a dull beige within months. Linen curtains are beautiful but not practical here.
What finally worked was polyester blackout curtains. Polyester is synthetic. It does not absorb moisture. It resists UV fading. It does not shrink. My current curtains are 100 percent polyester with a triple-weave construction. The outer face is a neutral gray. The inner face is white. Between them is a black yarn layer that blocks 99 percent of light.
Two years in direct sun. No fading. No shrinkage. No mold. They look the same as the day I installed them.
Blackout Curtains Are Essential In Dubai
Do you want to sleep past 6 AM in summer? Then you need blackout curtains. The sun rises early and is blinding by 5:30 AM. Standard curtains let through enough light to wake you.
Blackout curtains also reduce heat gain. In July, my living room window faces west. Before blackout curtains, the room temperature rose 3 degrees in the afternoon. The AC ran constantly. After installing blackout curtains, the temperature rise dropped to 1 degree. My DEWA bill decreased by about 150 AED per month in summer.
The key is proper installation. Blackout curtains must overlap the window frame by at least 10 cm on all sides. Light leaks around the edges defeat the purpose. I installed a fabric-covered pelmet (a box at the top) to block light from above. Side channels or magnetic strips on the edges block side gaps.
Curtain Linings: Interlining Vs Thermal
Dubai curtains need more than one layer. The decorative outer fabric alone is insufficient. You need a lining.
Standard lining is a thin polyester or cotton fabric that protects the main fabric from UV. It helps but not enough.
Thermal lining has a foam or acrylic coating that reflects heat. It makes a noticeable difference in rooms with direct sun. My thermal-lined curtains reduced the surface temperature of the window glass on the room side by 8 degrees.
Interlining is a thick, fuzzy layer between the main fabric and the lining. It adds weight, improves draping, and provides insulation. However, interlining traps dust and is difficult to clean. I tried interlined curtains in a bedroom. After one year, the interlining was full of dust that no vacuum could remove. I do not recommend interlining in Dubai.
For most homes, thermal lining alone is sufficient. For bedrooms, add a separate blackout blind behind the curtain for maximum light control.
The Shrinkage Problem And How To Prevent It
Many fabrics shrink in Dubai's heat and humidity. Natural fibers like cotton and linen shrink the most. Even some polyester blends shrink if not pre-shrunk.
My first velvet curtains shrank because the fabric was not pre-shrunk before sewing. The manufacturer cut and sewed from untreated fabric. When I hung them, the heat caused the fibers to contract. The hems pulled up. The heading tape wrinkled.
When ordering custom curtains in Dubai, always ask if the fabric has been pre-shrunk. Reputable curtain makers pre-wash or steam-treat the fabric before cutting. If they say no, find another maker.
For ready-made curtains, buy slightly longer than needed. Wash or steam them before hemming. Allow for 5-8 percent shrinkage. Then hem to final length. I learned to add 10cm to the length of any ready-made curtain.
Curtain Headings For Dubai AC Vents
Most apartments in Dubai have AC vents near windows. The cold air blows directly onto curtains. This creates two problems. First, the curtains billow and move constantly. Second, condensation forms on the cold curtain fabric, especially with thermal linings, leading to mold.
My first apartment had a ceiling vent directly above the window. The curtains blew open constantly, letting in light and heat. I solved this by changing the heading from eyelet to pinch pleat with a weighted hem. The pinch pleat creates more structure. The weights keep the curtain hanging straight despite the airflow.
I also installed magnetic curtain weights sewn into the bottom hem. Four weights per curtain panel. They add enough mass that the AC cannot move the fabric.
Cleaning Curtains In Dubai Conditions
Curtains in Dubai need cleaning every six months, not once a year like in cooler climates. Dust embeds into the fabric. The dust then absorbs humidity and can grow mold or cause odors.
Vacuum curtains monthly using a brush attachment. This removes surface dust before it works into the fibers.
For deep cleaning, I use a professional curtain cleaning service. They remove the curtains, clean in an extraction machine, and rehang. Cost is about 150-250 AED per panel depending on size. Worth it. I tried washing a curtain panel at home. The fabric twisted, the lining separated, and the heading deformed. Never again.
If you must clean at home, check the care label. Polyester curtains can often be machine washed on delicate cycle cold, then hung to dry. Never machine dry curtains. The heat shrinks and damages.
Curtain Tracks Vs Poles For Dubai Windows
Poles (rods) look decorative but have limitations. They cannot curve around corners. They require space on both sides of the window for the finials. And heavy curtains can sag on long poles.
Tracks are superior for Dubai windows for several reasons. First, tracks can be curved or bent for corner windows or bay windows. Second, tracks mount flush to the ceiling or wall, minimizing light gaps. Third, tracks with ball-bearing gliders pull smoothly even with heavy blackout curtains.
I installed a ceiling-mounted aluminum track system from a curtains supplier who specializes in tracks. The track is rated for 50 kilograms per meter. My heavy blackout curtains glide effortlessly. No sagging after two years.
For windows wider than 3 meters, use a corded track system. The cord allows you to open and close the curtains without walking across the room. My living room track is 4.5 meters wide. The corded mechanism cost an extra 200 AED but is worth it.
Motorized Curtains: Luxury Or Necessity
Motorized curtains are becoming common in Dubai. High ceilings and wide windows make manual curtains difficult to reach. My friend has motorized curtains in his villa with 4.5 meter ceilings. Without a motor, he would need a ladder to open and close them.
I did not install motorized because my windows are standard height. But I tested a few systems. Battery-powered motors last about six months on a charge. Hardwired motors require an electrician to install a power outlet near the track. The motors themselves cost 800 to 1,500 AED per window.
Motorization is worth considering for hard-to-reach windows, for home automation integration, or for people with mobility issues. Otherwise, manual corded tracks work fine.
Color Selection For Curtains In Dubai Sun
Dark curtains fade faster than light curtains. The reason is simple. Dark colors absorb more UV energy. That energy breaks down dye molecules. Red, purple, and blue dyes are the least lightfast. Yellow, beige, and gray last longer.
My burgundy curtains faded badly. My current gray curtains show no fading after two years. If you want a dark color, look for fabrics labeled "UV stabilized" or "lightfastness rating 7-8" on a scale of 1 to 8. Most outdoor fabrics have high lightfastness. Some indoor curtain fabrics do not.
Another trick is to use a double layer. A light-colored sheer curtain closest to the glass takes the UV hit. The dark curtain behind it stays protected. I have a white sheer and gray blackout in my bedroom. The sheer has yellowed slightly. The blackout is perfect.
Final Verdict On Curtains For Dubai
Skip natural fabrics: linen, cotton, velvet, wool. They cannot handle Dubai. Choose 100 percent polyester with thermal lining. Insist on pre-shrunk fabric. Use blackout construction for bedrooms. Install ceiling-mounted tracks with cord mechanisms for wide windows. Clean professionally every six months. And accept that even the best curtains will need replacement after five to seven years of continuous exposure. My current polyester blackout curtains are on year three. They look new. I expect two to three more years before any noticeable degradation. That is excellent for Dubai.
